Dreams of the Red Chamber

Dream of the Red Chambers, written by Cao Xueqin in the Qing dynasty, is one of China’s Four Greatest Classical Novels. It’s has long been considered a masterpiece of Chinese literature.

The book extensively describes the “hundred arts of the red chamber” and hence it is reputed as an encyclopedia of traditional Chinese cultures.

The Cao family, to which the author of the Dream of the Red Chambers belongs, has governed the Jiangnan region for many years. It is widely believed that Cao Xueqin drew personal experience from his life to write the Dream of the Red Chamber.

It is not hard to notice the many parallels between the book and their lives in Beijing and Jiangnan. This book also examines the crafts and cultural exchanges between the Ming and Qing dynasties.
